MSC Lirica Cruise begins operating in Santo Domingo

The city of Santo Domingo rebounds as a cruise destination with the arrival of the MSC Lirica to the Port of Sans Souci, having the Italian business line Mediterranean Shipping Company start its operations in the capital of the Dominican Republic.

Starting this 2012-2013 season this cruise, with the capacity of holding 2,200 passengers, will be available to the Dominican market and, during its operations, it will have local provisions from agricultural products, as well as tour offers through which cruisers will be able to enjoy the best of Santo Domingo.

The MSC Lirica will set sail from Sans Souci Port, with route to La Romana, St. Maarten, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, and the British Virgin Islands.

LisandroMacarrulla, the President of the Sans Souci Ports, lead the inauguration, along with Jaime Castillo Jorge, executive director; shipping entrepreneur Karsten H. Windeler; Orfila Salazar, director of the Cruceros del Ministerio de Turismo (Tourism Ministry Cruises) in the country; Juan de los Santos, township trustee from East Santo Domingo, and RaffaeleIaccarino, the Captain of the cruise, along with the rest of the crew members.

During the MSC Lirica inauguration, the traditional plaque exchange between Sans Souci Port and the Captain was held, for arriving at that port for the first time.

The executive director of Sans Souci Ports, Jaime Castillo Jorge, stated that the starting of the MSC Lirica operations in the Port of Santo Domingo is the result of a three year long hard working from the authorities of the touristic sector and the port, trying to show the goodness of the port, the country and the city of Santo Domingo as a cruise destination.

When referring to the benefits that this could bring to the country, he expressed that when a cruise lands in the Dominican Republic, it can shed between US$180 and US$200, covering the many different services that the city can offer. However, he did mention that this will depend on the quality and competitiveness of the products.

Castillo also pointed that the vessel is using the agricultural products that come from the countryside, which has been a vision of the Dominican President, Danilo Medina, and who is also interested in having this type of cruises bring wealth to the city. Furthermore, the executive director thanked the joint efforts from the government authorities, such as the Ministry of Tourism, Touristic Police, AMET, National Police and Municipal Police, the municipalities from East Santo Domingo, the Distrito Nacional, and the Navy.

Characteristics of thevessel
